Class Kit for Introduction to Pastels with Jill Tichenor in Overland in Overland
The most direct painting method is to apply pigment directly on a surface. Pastel painting is the closest art form that allows you to do that. Often people think pastel art as drawing, and indeed there is some drawing involved with this and all 2 dimensional art forms. Painting involves blending and mixing color, and that is where pastels excel.
You will gain a new appreciation for this medium as the directness often times results in a more vivid and clear image. The paintings done in class will be on a variety of different surfaces, in order to offer the student a better idea of which paper is ideal for a particular technique.
Some students feel that pastel is a stepping stone to other painting media. Pastel generally not use a medium that glues the pigment to the surface like other painting media requires. So there may be a greater comfort with the direct approach. Jill has a great background in teaching drawing and will no doubt refer to drawing techniques as she teaches this class.
